Fiber of the Week - Dec. 23

First of all, a very happy holidays to all our Coveted Yarn customers and friends. Two messages for you this week. The first is about the fiber of the week. It's Wooly Stripes by Nashua. Rob knows by now I'm a fool for self-striping yarn, and this one is terrific. It's a worsted weight that is great for just straight knitting, crocheting and felting. If you're a novice at any of these, take it from me, a self-striping yarn will make you look like a genius. If you're on Ravelry, please take a moment to look at some of the projects made with this yarn; you may find them as motivational as I did. Available in 17 inspiring colorways, this yarn will be 25% off until Wednesday, December 30.
The specs:
Content: 100% Wool
Size: 50g/1.75oz
Yardage: 88 yards/80 meters
Needle Size: US 8 – 9/5 – 5.5 mm
Gauge: 16-18 sts and 20-22 rows = 4"
Yarn Weight:4 - Medium

And now for message #2: usually bored on New Year's Day? Not into watching football or nursing a hangover? Head on down to Coveted Yarn (the shop) for an all day baby hat knit-and-crochet-a-thon. Comfy couch, usually lots of candy, fun people, and a nice charity activity to start off the year. Here's the info on the baby hat project:
NEWBORN KNIT CROCHET HAT CONTEST: Donate a knit or crocheted hat to the cause and each hat entered will be counted as an entry into a drawing for a $50 gift certificate to our website: http://www.covetedyarn.com/ All hats will be donated to the Beverly Hospital to be given to newborns. There is no limit on the number of hats you can send in. We are running this contest quarterly. All hats should be sent to: Coveted Yarn PO BOX 6015 Gloucester, MA 01930 (or if you're in the shop, just hand them to Rob!) Please include contact info so we can let you know if you win!! (if you include your e-mail we can include you in mini sales we run for entrants) Thanks again. As always any questions can be directed to info@covetedyarn.com.

And finally, your blogger would like to borrow the words of Irving Berlin for my wish for you:
"May your days be merry and bright, and may all your Christmases be white."

Two fibers of the week this week! Rob's feeling generous. Both are 20% off.

The one shown above is in the shop by popular demand - Rob tells me people kept requesting this yarn. It's from the popular Ella Rae line and called Mosaic. It's fun and fluffy and a great yarn for scarves or particularly cushy sweaters. Personally, I think it would make a great addition to a freeform crochet project. It's available in 5 unique colorways. The specs:

On to the second fiber of the week - it's a sock yarn found on our new sock yarn page. It's a terrific self striper named Indulgence and it is absolutely the softest sock yarn I've ever felt. There are two versions - one has aloe - mmmm. One of the things I've discovered over the past year is that sock yarns don't have be used for socks (duh!). It makes really soft scarfs, and a colleague of mine at work makes wonderful duster-type sweaters from self-striping sock yarns. The items look so complex because of the self-striping and they're delighfully machine washable. Here are the specs on Indulgence (one skein makes two socks):

Supersoft Machine washable sock yarn

You might know that the blogger (Maureen) doesn't get to pick the fiber of the week - Rob does. But I couldn't be happier with the pick for this week. It's Nautical Cotton by Louisa Harding that's 20% off. I haven't won the lottery, so I can't buy yarn every week, but this week, I'm certainly going to Coveted Yarn the store and pick up some skeins of this one. I've always been very happy with Louisa Harding yarns, and I really want to make myself a lacy summer scarf with this one to wear at work. The only problem is picking which one of the 20 delightful colors. Well, enough about me.

Fiber of the Week - March 11, 2009

This week's fiber of the week is a new favorite of mine. It's Aussi Sock yarn by Oasis, and I just used it for a project for a child's hat with straps. I was requested to make it in a machine washable yarn in vivid colors, so I picked the selection shown above called "Spanish Fiesta." This yarn comes in a remarkably large skein - 400 yards - so if you're a sock knitter, you'll easily get a pair of socks from one skein. But as I found out, sock yarn isn't just for socks any more. At 20% off the usual retail of $12, you can't go wrong.

Fiber of the week - March 4, 2009

Hi, everybody. Maureen here, back to blog regularly again.

I got to pick this week's fiber of the week and with March coming in like a lion here, it's time to cheer up with some sparkle. It's Louisa Harding's Jasmine that's 20% off this week. It's a lovely, spring-summer yarn with a hint of silver twinkling throughout. It would make a spectacular shawl or a terrific evening tank or tee-style top. The photo we have available does not do this yarn justice; the image makes it look almost thick-thin, where in fact it's lovely and smooth. It's available in 12 colors, some pastel and some darker.

The specs:

Fiber: 48% Cotton 39%Bamboo 10%Silk 3%Poly

50g Balls

Yardage: 107

Stitches: 5.5

Needle size: 6

PS. We're having a major winter storm on Cape Ann, and I'm home from work today. I'm looking past the computer to the doors to the deck. Snow is coating the marsh and I just saw a cardinal flash by, red against the white, gray, and black of the landscape.

Helmet Liner Contest

Hello all,

I am announcing a new contest in addition to our Baby Hat Contest that we run quarterly.
We are running a Helmet Liner contest for the troops overseas. Right now it is winter in Iraq and Afghanistan and our troops are facing some severe winter conditions. There is a need for Helmet Liners to keep them warm. They must be made from 100% wool in approved colors.

Here is a link to more info about qualifications http://www.citizensam.org/ and a free pattern.

We sell the Ella Rae Classic (which is great for this program) at $5 a ball to help facilitate the production of more of these Helmet Liners. This a great sale price for a 100g ball of worsted weight pure wool 5 sts to the inch on US #7.

The Contest mimicks our Baby Hat Contest where each item sent in counts as one entry, no limit as to how many you can send in. To be eligible they must meet the FIBER AND COLOR guidelines. Every quarter we are having a drawing for a $50 gift certificate to the store/website for one lucky winner, just like the Baby Hat Contest. Please consider doing something to help our brave men and women who are overseas protecting our interests. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Entries can be sent to

Fiber of the Week - Jan. 7, 2009

The holidays are over and we're back to normal life. We need something soft to sweeten the fall from the heights of holiday festivity, and this week's fiber of the week should do that. It's Noro Kochoran that's 20% off this week. It has the beautiful blending of colors that we're used to with Noro and the softness of angora. It comes in six beautiful colorways - please check them out on the website.

The specs:
Fiber: 50% Wool, 20% Silk, 30% Angora
100g balls
Yardage: 176
Stitches: 3.5
Needle size: 10
Aran weight

This yarn will be on sale until midday January 14. If any of the colors you order are not currently in stock, Rob will immediately order them for you.

Tomorrow is Elvis Presley's birthday. I'll be having his favorite sandwich - peanut butter and banana.

Blue Heron Clearance

Great news! Rob has decided to leave all the Blue Heron clearance yarn at $18 rather than ending the sale this week. More great news - he got another shipment of the Blue Heron clearance yarn today and hopes to have it on the website by the end of this weekend. Remember, this is a Coveted Yarn exclusive.

I'm warning you all - I'm going to be at the shop when it opens tomorrow!

PS Fiber of the Week will begin again next Wednesday January 7.
