Merry Christmas - Fiber of the Week - Dec. 23

Santa Rob would like to thank all his customers for the wonderful year he's had with the website and the new store. From right now until Dec. 31, all the Blue Heron yarn that's in the clearance section is $18 a skein. This applies only to yarn that's in stock and it's first come, first serve. This is a great opportunity to try the beautiful Blue Heron colors for yourself at a price you may not see again for a long, long time. The suggested retail on this yarn is $25 to $39 a skein.
And my own personal Christmas message to you:
"May your days be merry and bright,
And may all your Christmases be white."
- Maureen aka Rockport Mo
P.S. Rob says Happy Holidays and thanks for a great year.

Baby Hat Contest

So,
Here is the Baby Hat Contest....We really have had a dramatic drop off in hats this quarter. I am taking the blame on that as I have been focusing my efforts elsewhere with the store opening and all. Please consider making a hat or two and sending/bringing it in. There is always a need for things like this and with the minimal amount of hats we are working with right now you have a decent chance of winning.

NEWBORN KNIT CROCHET HAT CONTEST: Donate a knit or crocheted hat to the cause and each hat entered will be counted as an entry into a drawing for a $50 gift certificate to our website: http://www.covetedyarn.com/ or store. All hats will be donated to Beverly Hospital to be given to newborns. There is no limit on the number of hats you can send in. To be eligible all hats must be received by end of day on December 31st. If you are running a little behind schedule don't worry as we are running this contest quarterly. All hats should be sent to:

Coveted Yarn
PO BOX 6015
Gloucester, MA 01930

You can drop them off in our store too!
Coveted Yarn
121 East Main St

Fiber of the Week - Dec. 10

Rob himself picked this week's fiber of the week. It's something I had somehow completely overlooked, and this photo does it no justice. It's Louisa Harding's Grace Wool and Silk that's 20% off this week. It's a quietly lovely yarn that seems to glow from within due to its silk content. You won't be disappointed in the hand feel of it or in any of the 17 colors.

The specs:
Fiber: 50% Merino Wool 50% Silk
50g balls
Yardage: 110
Stitches: 5.5
Needle size: 6
DK Weight

This yarn will be on sale until midday December 17. If any of the colors you order are not currently in stock, Rob will immediately order them for you.

Hope you all are making good progress on your Christmas projects.

Fiber of the Week - December 3

If you're as old as I am, or just like classic rock, you'll remember this song by Bob Seger:

"That's why I'm going to Katmandu,

Up to the mountains where I'm going to,

And if I ever get out of here that's what I'm gonna do.

K - k - k - k - k - Katmandu,

That's really, really where I'm going to,

Oh, if I ever get out of here

I'm going to Katmandu."

If I were going up into the Himalayas near Katmandu (or Kathmandu), I'd want a nice cabled sweater made out of this week's 20% off yarn of the week. It's Kathmandu Aran Tweed by Queensland Collection. Comes in 18 tweedy colors and is a great all purpose yarn for just about any wintery project you might think of. Let us know if you take it to Katmandu!

And the specs:
Fiber: 85% Merino Wool, 10% Silk, 5% Cashmere

50g balls

Yardage: 104

Stitches: 4.5

Needle size: 8

This yarn will be on sale until midday December 10. If any of the colors you order are not currently in stock, Rob will immediately order them for you.

Fiber of the Week - November 26

Hey, everbody - Happy Thanksgiving! I must say I'm very grateful for all the friends I've made this year in the fiber world. And I'm also very grateful that Coveted Yarn has a local shop for me to haunt. I'm telling you, I walk in intending to spend 5 minutes and it's a hour and a half later when I leave.

On to the fiber of the week. It's Socos by Esther Bitran. This comes in 12 hand-dyed colorways and I had a hard time deciding which one to show in this blog. This looks like it would be one heck of a scarf yarn and fast, too, because it's bulky. Guess I'm talking myself into buying some myself this week! Why not at 20% off?

The specs:

Fiber: 100% Wool

100g balls

Yardage: 82

Stitches: 2.5

Needle size: 11-13

This yarn will be on sale until midday December 3. If any of the colors you order are not currently in stock, Rob will immediately order them for you.

DECEMBER!!!! Excuse me, I have to go knit a scarf, then crochet some bookmarks, then knit some washcloths, oh and there are two more scarves to crochet.....

Toques for Toot - New Charity Project

College Student Barack Obama and his grandparents Dunham - Associated Press photo

Maureen here blogging - thanks to Rob for letting me do this.

Some background: as everyone knows, President-elect Obama's grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, nicknamed Toot, died of cancer just before the election. She was his "rock" during his teenage years and a major influence on his life.

I am a member of Ravelry, a social networking website for knitters and crocheters and within that site, one of the groups called Knitters for Obama. During the campaign, we knit and crocheted items for homeless veterans. It was a great success and now we have a new project, inspired by Toot. And anyone can help.

We are knitting and crocheting chemo caps. The Obama family specifically asked the Ravelry group make caps for the University of Chicago’s cancer center in Toot’s memory. If we get enough caps, we will also consider donating to a hospital/hospice in Hawaii, where Toot lived. We are hoping for delivery to roughly coincide with Inauguration Day.

If you would like to participate - even one hat - please send me email to maureenmo3 at gmail.com (you know what to do with the at, right? just trying to fool the spam robots). I can gather the hats from non-Ravelry people and mail them to Chicago myself.

What to use? Yarn should be machine-washable and SOFT. Like, baby’s bottom soft. We are getting mixed opinions about wool, although certainly a high quality SOFT merino or merino blend would probaby work so long as it’s machine washable and SOFT. Cottons that aren’t too stiff but rather are SOFT are good; so are cotton blends, bamboo and bamboo blends, silk blends, acrylic and acrylic blends, so long as they are SOFT and machine washable.

I was at Coveted Yarn the Store tonight and really liked the Sirdar Snuggly DK. It's soft, comes in over 50 colorssuitable for men, women and children, and is machine washable. Rob has it on sale for 25% off in honor of this project.

As far as patterns and sizes go, the Ravelry group has been told that it is better to avoid patterns with eyelets/holes because the skin underneath shows and may make the wearer feel self-conscious.

Since people of all ages get cancer, assume that we will need caps for people of both genders and all ages. I've been told that the hospitals usually come up short on caps for men.

If your political leanings are such that you don't care to participate in this particular project, then think about doing even one charity project this Christmas season. Remember the Coveted Yarn Baby Hats For Beverly Hospital. The Snuggly DK would be wonderful for those hats as well.

Thanks for reading this far.

PS thanks to Blackbunny on Ravelry who wrote up the project information I got most of this post from.

Big Fiber Special!!!

So excited - Rob has one of my favorite yarns at a big special price this week! It's Ella Rae Classic - a 100 percent worsted weight wool that comes in an amazing 74 colors - 68 solids and 6 variegated. It's suggested retail is $6.49. At Coveted Yarn, it's currently $5 a skein, a 23% reduction. At this price, you can easily buy a sweater's worth or enough to felt a very large tote bag at an affordable price.

If you're on Cape Ann, stop by the shop at 121 E. Main St., E. Gloucester. Rob has about 30 of the colors on the shelves. As always, if he doesn't have the color in stock, whether you're ordering in person or online, he will order that color for you.

Did you notice I'm not calling this the yarn of the week? It's just possible this price might last a bit longer than a week - if demand is there for it. So order early and often!

Fiber/Craft Day - Oct. 4

Coveted Yarn participated in the Fiber/Craft Day at the Rockport (MA) Community House last Saturday, Oct. 4. Rob and Laurel brought some of the yarn in their office. Here it is as displayed. The grand piano got put to good use, didn't it?

See all the yarn on the table by the window? Clearance yarn. The shoppers went crazy.

At this event, we had knitters, crocheters, spinners, needle felters, and a rug maker. You could shop, do your craft, or ask anyone to teach you their specialization. Leslie Wind (www.lesliewind.com), the shawl pin maker, held a class in simple wire working. There was a pot luck lunch with so much yummy food it was unbelievable. A great time was had by all, and we may not wait another year for the next one.

Here's the yarn and here's the baby. How can you resist?

This week in Essex County we are enjoying the Topsfield Fair which is America's oldest agricultural fair, having started in 1818. The fair hosts a giant pumpkin contest, and this year's winner came in at 1, 464 pounds and was grown by Wesley Dwelly of Massachusetts. That's why I'm showing this color for the yarn of the week. Of course, you can see llamas at the fair and this leads us to the identity of the fiber of the week.

This week's 20% off fiber of the week is Baby Llama by Elsebeth Lavold. It's a big favorite in the Coveted Yarns family because it's so much fun just to pet the soft, soft yarn!

Fiber of the Week - Sept. 3

Hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend! I happen to know that there was a cookout at the home of Coveted Yarn where projects were shown, knit nights were planned, steak was grilled, and the best corn of the season was had by all. Yum!

Up next for 20% off is a great-looking Aran weight sweater yarn. It's from Europe and called Flama by Fil Katia. As you might be able to tell from the photo, it's a self-striping yarn, but the contrasting stripes are intermittent. This gives a much more subtle look than the usual self-stripers.

The specs:

50g balls

Fiber of the Week - Aug. 27

Summer is softening here on Cape Ann with cool nights for sleeping and lower humidity. Yesterday was the first day of school in Rockport! It's definitely time to think about getting a sweater project on the needles. It's still four months until the holidays, so you won't have to feel guilty about knitting one for yourself, especially with this lovely Louisa Harding yarn at 20% off.

This is the Kashmir DK, a yarn with the warmth of wool, the softness of cashmere, and the structure of microfiber. Due to its chained or braided construction, it will give you good stitch definition. With 26 colors, you could find a great pick for a woman's or child's sweater, a man's hat, or a scarf for anyone. Along with this fiber of the week, we'd like to welcome the Louisa Harding line of yarns to covetedyarn.com.

The specs:

Fiber: 55% Wool 10% Cashmere 35% Microfiber

50g balls

Fiber of the Week Sale - Debbie Bliss Pure Cotton

Hi, Maureen here with her first contribution. Rob has graciously allowed me to pick the sale yarn of the week and also to announce it.

It's Debbie Bliss Pure Cotton. It's on sale until next Wednesday, July 16, at noon.

It's really HOT here on Cape Ann, so a cotton yarn sounded like a good idea. This is Aran weight, comes in 24 colors, and should be good for baby hats (hint, hint). At 20% off, I'm going to order a bunch myself for hats and dishcloths. Dive in and get some for the contest! (As always, you don't have to use yarn from Coveted Yarn for the contest. Rob is too generous for that.)
Rob is also running a special on Debbie Bliss pattern books. Order $50 or more of Debbie Bliss products and we will send a FREE pattern book. We have four to choose from:
  • The Tweed Collection
  • Book Six
  • Number 5
  • Simple Living
When you order please specify in the "order notes" section which book you would like.

PS. If you're a Raveler, you know me as RockportMo. Hope it's cooler where you are.

A hearty welcome for Maureen!

Hello all,

I just wanted to let everyone know that Maureen is going to help me out with the blog. You will see some posts from her on here soon! If you have any questions about anything please don't hesitate to ask at info@covetedyarn.com

Update on the Coveted Yarn Baby Hat Contest!

Tha amazing thing about something as simple and great as this contest is the ability it has to restore something so large as hope or confidence. That being said I want to thank everyone who participtes either by sending in hats or just telling others about it. It is nice to know there are still people who not only care, but care enough to do something about it!

When we ran the first quarter's contest and only received two hats I was sad. I thought about dropping what seemed like a great little idea. I decided to give it another quarter to see how it would do. The second quarter we got a total of 66 hats donated to the hospital. I was thrilled, it had started to work. Then it happened again, after almost the entire span of the contest and only receiving 15 hats I was beginning to wonder again....is it a good idea?

Well, Saturday morning I went to the PO box and was surprised, there were 75 new hats waiting for me! I collected another 10 from some faithful locals and the tally stands at 100 hats for this quarter! I can hardly believe it! Thanks to everyone for helping out. I promise not to lose faith any more. We haven't checked the PO box yet today and there is still some time before the contest ends at midnight so we might even get a few more! It is really a nice thing and I am glad to be part of it. Thanks again to everyone!

Don't forget we will start the next contest July 1st to end September 30th! Please keep sending in those hats!

-Robert

Missing Orders!

Hello all,
If you have placed an order through our website and not received a confirmation e-mail we did not get your order. It has come to my attention that some of our customers have encountered issues with Paypal and their orders have not been coming through to us. Please e-mail us if this applies to you! We have no way of knowing who you are or what you need for yarn!

We think we have circumnavigated the problem as best we can since the issues have been with paypal but if you order and don't receive any info from us please let us know. We are also in the works on setting everything up to accept credit cards directly through the site which should eliminate the current problem, so please bear with us.

Every order that comes in is one that we appreciate. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Fiber of the Week sale is Schaefer's ANNE

Hi All,

This week's fiber of the week is Anne from the Schaefer Yarn Company. Anne is a fingering weight superwash yarn that is sold as it is dyed which means each skein is considered unique. There are 34 skeins on the website and 18 more going on in the next day or two which gives a decent selection to choose from. As you can see from the pattern selection for this yarn it is more than just another super duper pretty sock yarn.

Unfortunately our website inventory system is not yet able to automatically remove items that are sold out so there may be the situation that someone else beats you to the skein you chose. I will try to remove skeins as they are sold.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

A very persistant hat

This one just doesn't to be photographed and posted. Even when I think it is being posted it evades me once again!

Victory is mine!!!!

The one that (almost) got away

Here is hat # 38 that snuck away and hid when I was gathering the hats for the last update post.

I have been getting very positive feedback from people sending in the hats they make. I think that is great. Rumor has it that this is a fun thing to do. Maybe it would be fun for you and your friends too!

We just added a bunch (and by bunch I mean quite a few) Schaefer Yarn Company Patterns to the website.

Something to sink your teeth into!

For the month of March we will take a portion of our gross sales and donate it to Harvest Meals. Harvest Meals is a program through Cape Ann Interfaith. It provides meals for those who need them. It is a great program and one that I am personally familiar with and proud to have been able to take part in. This is in addition to our hat contest which you can read about below.
