Fiber of the Week - Sept. 22, 2010

We have an entire family of yarn as the fiber of the week this week, and that's only fitting. The Flat Rocks family of yarn is hand-dyed by Rob's sisters Elizabeth and Amanda in Gloucester, MA! We have a multitude of weights available in a myriad of colors (just look at the photo above for a sample.) Please go to the website and check out the colors and weights available. I am seriously in love with the worsted Morning Twilight; I'm usually a bright colors fan, but the Morning Twilight is beautifully subtle. Also, be aware that the superwash yarns are amazingly soft for wool yarns. You could definitely wear the superwash varieties next to the skin. All the yarns are wool or wool/mohair blends.

Remember - these are hand-dyed yarns. Please allow for variations among skeins. You all know the trick to knitting with hand-dyed, right? Alternating skeins every two rows? Sure, you knew that.

All Flat Rocks yarns will be on sale for 20% off until midday, Wednesday, September 29. Have fun during the first week of autumn.

Fiber of the week - July 7, 2010

This week's fiber of the week has a funny name for a terrific yarn. It's Farmhouse Yarn's Lumpy Bumpy. Farmhouse is a new line being carried by Coveted Yarn; we are very excited to be carrying yarn from Connecticut and to celebrate, the Lumpy Bumpy is 25% off this week. It's hand-dyed and each skein is unique. If you decide to do a project with this great yarn that requires more than one skein, it's recommended that you alternate skeins every couple of rows. Check the website for the 79 different colorways available. In an effort to provide our customers with the widest possible selection we offer Farmhouse Yarns' full collection through our website. As a result some colors may need to be special ordered resulting in a slight delay. Please call for availability or with any questions.

Fiber of the Week - June 30, 2010

What a treat! My favorite yarn in the whole world is the fiber of the week. It's Rayon Metallic by Blue Heron and it's 20% off. If you are not familiar with this yarn, it's hand-dyed, 88% rayon and 12% metallic. The metallic thread does not show up well in the photos, but it is much less subtle in person. Because this is a rayon yarn, it is shiny and slinky. If this yarn were a person, it would be a ballroom dancer, but not an amateur, definitely a world-class professional! Currently available in 44 of Blue Heron's magnificent colorways. If you are a Ravelry member, please look at some of the projects made from this yarn for inspiration.

The specs:

88% Rayon, 12% Metallic

8 Oz.

550 Yards

5 St/Inch

Needles US #7

Worsted Weight

This yarn will be on sale until middday Wednesday, July 7. Happy Independence Day to our American customers and Happy Canada Day to our northern neighbors. (Come to think of it, the sparkle in the Rayon Metallic kind of does remind me of fireworks!)

Clearance Yarn - So Fun to Play!

Not a fiber of the week, but an update on how your blogger is playing with the Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride Worsted Seconds in the Creme color: crockpot dyeing.

This first skein was dyed using Iced Blue Raspberry Lemonaid Kool Aid and McCormick food coloring in blue and green.

This second skein was dyed using Wilton's Icing Colors in violet, delphinium blue and juniper green.

Because we're only paying $3.95 per skein for this yarn, I feel like I can experiment and if the yarn looks like clown barf when I'm done, no great loss. And the knots don't bother me because I'm a crocheter, and they're pretty easy for us crocheters to deal with.

Thanks to Rob for the use of the shop camera for the photos!

Fiber of the Week - April 28, 2010

Your faithful blogger begged Rob for a cotton for Fiber of the Week, and he came through as always. This is Baby Cotton by Ella Rae; the fiber content is actually 88% cotton and 12% nylon for that "sproing" that cotton alone just doesn't have. I went to Ravelry to see what people had made from this yarn. Certainly there were baby hats, sweaters, booties and toys, but I also found sweaters, tanks, shrugs and hats for adults. This is a great summer yarn and available in 19 colors, some of which are not "babyish" at all, unless your name is Morticia Addams and you dress your little ones in Ink black. But I digress - must mention that this yarn is 20% off this week.

The specs:
Fiber: 88% Cotton, 12%Nylon
50g ball
Yardage: 110
Stitches: 5.5
Needle size: 6
DK Weight

This yarn will be on sale midday until Wednesday, May 5. Surprise spring cleaning sales still popping up at Facebook.

Tuesday, April 20, 2010

Fibers of the Week - April 21, 2010

Three fibers of the week this week! This first is a continuation of our sale on the Yarn Harvest recycled yarns in honor of Earth Day. Still 25% off, still 100% wool!

Two more yarns from the always high-quality Mirasol line are also on a big sale! First, it's Hacho, a DK available in 16 colorways.

The other is Chirapa, a sport weight available in 6 colorways. Both yarns are 100% merino wool, hand-dyed in the Peruvian Highlands. Don't forget that a portion of every Mirasol purchase goes to fund a school for the children of the shepherds. These two yarns are 40% off - get them while you can, as these two varieties have been discontinued.

So remember, whichever fiber of the week you purchase this week, you are making a contribution, either by recycling or by helping educate children in Peru!

Tuesday, April 13, 2010

Fiber of the Week - April 14, 2010

You are in for a real treat this week. Coveted Yarn has just started carrying the Yarn Harvest yarns and is proud to be the first shop outside of Austin, Texas to do so. Yarn Harvest buys up 100% wool sweaters wherever they can be found - yard sales, thrift stores, you name it. They then frog the sweaters and wash and clean the yarn with environmentally friendly products. The yarn air dries and then is wound into 126 yard skeins. This recycled wool yarn is on sale for 25% off this week.

Check the website for colors, weights, and number of skeins available in each set. A set comes from one sweater, so plan your project when ordering. The color and weight you order may not be available if you need more later.

The specs:
100% recycled wool
126 yard skeins
Weights available as of 4/14: 4, 5.5, 6, 7, and 8.5 stitches per inch.

These yarns will be on sale until midday, Wednesday April 21.

Don't forget to keep checking the website for unpredictable spring cleaning sales!

Wednesday, April 7, 2010

Fiber of the Week - April 7, 2010

Rob announced this yarn as one of the spring cleaning yarns, but I like it so much I asked if it could be the fiber of the week. It is a PERFECT spring/summer yarn by the really terrific Louisa Harding Line. It's Merletto and available in 12 colors AND 25% off!

The specs:
Fiber: 46% Viscose, 34% Nylon, 20% Linen
50g balls
Yardage: 98
Stitches: 5.5
Needle size: 5-6

This yarn will be on sale until Wednesday, April 14.

Don't forget to keep checking for spring cleaning yarns on the website or at Facebook or Twitter. They will be announced at unexpected intervals during the week.

Tuesday, March 30, 2010

Fiber of the Week - March 31, 2010

This week's fiber of the week is a revelation. I was in the shop on Sunday, and everyone who came in had to stroke it and look at all the colors. The name of the yarn does not do justice to what it is - it's the Sweater Pack by Done Roving. What isit? Three skeins of yarn all handpainted together (we currently have 8 colorways). You get enough in the pack to make a sweater or a lap throw or a whole flock of small projects. At 20% off, you could have a one of a kind sweater that will astonish even other knitters. First the specs and then an announcement:

The specs:

This pack contains 3-- 450 yard skeins of handpainted (all at the same time)

Each skein weighs approximately 8.8 ounces

Or approximately 1-3/4 pounds of yarn total

Bulky weight yarn

50/50 Wool/Nylon

The fiber of the week will be on sale until midday, Wednesday April 7.

And now for the announcement - it's time for spring cleaning (actually, that's what I was doing when I stopped to write the blog.) Rob is spring cleaning in the shop and will be announcing specials at unpredicable intervals over the next two months. He'll be announcing them via Facebook, Twitter, and possibly the Ravelry group. You could also just go to the website and check the sale yarns section. If you go there right now (Wed. Mar.31), Noro Kureyon is 30% off!

Knitters who come into the shop adore it for scarves. At 20% off this week, it's Marshmallows by Knitting Fever. Special Guest Appearance from Former FOW

Remember the fiber of the week from December 23? It was Woolly Stripes by Nashua. Your blogger bought 2 skeins of Citrus and 2 skeins of Dark Fuschia and made the famous Noro Striped Scarf. Am so pleased with the result of combining 2 self-striping yarns that I had one of my friends take a photo of it at work today.

A gentleman named Jared Flood wrote up this pattern which I found for free on Ravelry. Over 5400 of these scarves have been finished by Ravelers. I find fascinating the different yarns they use: Noro Kureyon, Noro Silk Garden, Noro Taiyo, Noro Iro, the aforementioned Wooly Stripes, and many self-striping sock yarns.
